Securecell BV, Getinge and DataHow AG held the 3rd  Learn & Connect seminar on February 13, 2025, in the Leiden Bio Science Park in the Netherlands about Advancing Upstream Bioprocessing through Digitalization and Automation

The Get-Together is designed to foster open, scientific dialogue and innovation, with little commercial influences. We will focus on how digital technologies, advanced modeling, data analytics, and automation are revolutionizing upstream bioprocessing. We aim to explore how these tools can enhance process optimization, improve production outcomes, and drive the future of biomanufacturing.

In our event agenda, we were honored to welcome four distinguished guest speakers from both industry and academia. These insightful presentations provided valuable perspectives on the latest innovations shaping the future of bioprocessing.

Dr. Cees Haringa, Technical University of Delft explored the challenges of scaling up bioprocesses, emphasizing the discrepancies between lab and industrial conditions. In large-scale operations, gradients create heterogeneous environments that influence cell growth and productivity. To bridge this gap, scientists employ a lifeline approach, utilizing CFD simulations, cell tracking, downscaling experiments, and kinetic modeling to analyze cellular experiences in real-world conditions. This strategy enhances the interaction between cells and their environment, ultimately improving scale-up efficiency.

Limber Acosta,  Director of Innovation & Technology Development Centrient Pharmaceuticals demonstrated how predictive multi-feed control can significantly enhance antibiotic production. By implementing scaled-down fermentation models, the team fine-tuned feed adjustments using real-time monitoring and predictive modeling. This method successfully replicated large-scale conditions, laying the groundwork for AI-driven process optimization and digital twin technology in biomanufacturing.

Astrid Aguilar Fajardo, Product Manager of Software solutions at Getinge introduced Lucullus® PIMS, a powerful tool for bioprocess management. This integrated platform centralizes data from bioreactors, analyzers, and control systems, providing real-time access, secure storage, and seamless connectivity with third-party applications. By automating control strategies and optimizing data management, Lucullus® PIMS enhances efficiency, security, and process robustness, making biomanufacturing more streamlined and reliable.

Dr. Jonathan Bones, Principal Investigator and Director at the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) highlighted advancements in Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) for monoclonal antibody (mAb) production. He showcased NIBRT’s next-generation system, which integrates inline, online, and at-line analyses for superior upstream process monitoring. Looking ahead, NIBRT aims to optimize cycle times and advance automation, driving more efficient and continuous biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
