CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF COLLABORATION BETWEEN GETINGE AND SECURECELL

Written by: Rowin Timmermans

The partnership between Getinge and Securecell, two biotech companies with synergistic technologies, reached a significant milestone last year, marking a decade of successful collaboration. Combining Getinge's bioreactor systems with Securecell's Lucullus® software, this partnership has proven to be mutually beneficial, adding value to both companies and delivering a best-in-class solution to customers worldwide.

Securecell’s Lucullus® process information management software has gained global reach through Getinge’s extensive network of distributors, enabling Securecell to access markets that would have been challenging to penetrate independently. At the same time, Getinge has been able to offer its customers a cutting-edge software solution that integrates not only Getinge’s bioreactor systems but also a wide array of third-party devices, opening nearly limitless possibilities for process automation and digitalization.

Seamless Integration Across the Board

The controllers of Getinge’s bioreactor systems can be accessed both locally (HMI) and remotely (web interface), offering an intuitive and user-friendly interface in both cases. On their own, these controllers already offer unique functionalities to users, but when the controllers are combined with the Lucullus® software, a multitude of additional possibilities comes within reach.

All Getinge’s bioreactor controllers can be seamlessly integrated into the Lucullus® platform: from the industrial i-Control systems (powered by Siemens or Allen-Bradley firmware) to the versatile embedded controllers (ez-Control, my-Control, in-Control, and SUB-Control), and the latest generation of bioreactor controllers, such as the Livit Flex. Lucullus® offers comprehensive automation capabilities, and more, across the entire product lineup.

To facilitate communication between the controllers and Lucullus®, Getinge provides three distinct communication protocols: the proprietary F-code protocol and the universal OPC DA and OPC UA protocols. This flexibility ensures smooth integration across diverse setups, meeting the needs of modern, data-driven bioprocessing environments.

Driving Process Automation

The combination of Getinge’s bioreactor controllers and Securecell’s Lucullus® software exemplifies the potential of advanced process control. As a starting point, the bioreactor controllers from Getinge offer users extensive customization options, including:

  • Integrating additional input and outputs

  • Flexible control loop configuration

  • Liquid flow and weight control

  • Synoptic configuration

  • Total gas flow control

Both local control (via the controller itself) and remote management (via Lucullus®) are supported, ensuring operational flexibility. Beyond basic functionality, like sensor measurements and control loop setpoints, Getinge’s bioreactor controllers allow users in Lucullus® to monitor and control:

  • Calibration parameters for sensors and actuators

  • Totalizers for pumps and Mass Flow Controllers

  • Control loop outputs and cascade limits

  • Timers for digital actuators

  • Alarm limits and statuses

  • PID control parameters

Frequent exchange of these parameters between Getinge bioreactor controllers and Lucullus® forms the backbone for automating fermentation and cell culture processes. In addition, Lucullus® provides many specialized features for automating processes, including:

  • Integration of data from other software and hardware sources

  • Logical devices for specialized programming functions

  • Independent data acquisition for each parameter

  • Parallel execution of various control strategies

  • Process progress tracking through  Phases

  • Step Chain visual programming interface

  • Time and event-based process changes

  • Various means to perform calculations

These features enable customers to achieve a high degree of sophistication in automating their processes in Lucullus®, thereby driving innovation.

Shared Vision: Customization and Service Excellence

The synergy between Securecell and Getinge goes beyond product integration. Both companies are committed to tailor-made solutions, offering comprehensive customization to meet unique customer needs when standard products are insufficient.

Both Getinge and Securecell recognize the importance of customer support and continuously collaborate to optimize their shared customer support experience. They are willing to take an extra step to help clients achieve their goals and ensure that their products and solutions deliver measurable value. This shared dedication to service and support has been pivotal to fostering long-term relationships with customers.

Looking Ahead: Celebrating Collaboration in 2025

To honor this decade of collaboration, Getinge and Securecell have planned a series of activities for 2025. These events will focus on the interaction between Getinge’s bioreactor controllers and Securecell’s Lucullus® software, aiming to deepen user knowledge and expand possibilities for process automation.

Planned activities include:

  • Join events, (etc,  Get-together seminar in the Leiden Bioscience Park on the 13th of February 2025)

  • Online training courses with a focus on process automation

  • Webinars highlighting innovative use cases and integration techniques

  • Joint workshop in Delft, the Netherlands, providing hands-on expertise

Details of these activities will be provided at a later stage.
